Interview: Mark Owen: Saver or spender?

Are you a saver or a spender?
At the moment I would say I am a spender. In the past I put a lot of money into getting a studio in my house and making my own record.

How much is in your wallet at the moment?
I don't have a wallet. In my pocket I have precisely pounds 11.30 and that's after buying a loaf of bread.

Do you know how much is in your bank account?
No, which is probably a good thing! I have a rough idea, but I haven't got what I used to.

How much did you earn in your first job?
My first job was a paper round. I was 13 and I earned pounds 3.50 a week including Sundays. Sunday papers were heavy and gave me backache.

What was your greatest financial triumph?
Hopefully it will be the album I am making at the moment.

What was your greatest financial disaster?
It was probably about a year ago when I tried to make a record at home. It was supposed to take between three and four months, but it ended up taking a year and it ran some high costs. It was not what I expected. It was a good experience though.

If you won the lottery tomorrow, what would you spend it on?
I would buy my sister a house. She has just had a baby and so that is something I would like to get her. Then I would like to invest more money in the artists that I am managing at the moment. I would also decorate my front room, put a new fire in.

Do you give regularly to charities?
I give to Amnesty, Age Concern and Greenpeace. I think it is important to help others, it makes you see the privileges you have, especially for me who got a lot at an early age.

Is money the root of all evil?
No money can really help people. A lot of society has money worries; people with money have different worries.
