Gary Jets Off For His Big Climb!

Gary and the rest of the Red Nose Day celebrity climbers set off from Heathrow this afternoon for Tanzania, ready to embark on their Mount Kilimanjaro trek.

Gary, sitting in seat 3D next to Chris Moyles, said ‘We’ve been planning to climb Mount Kilimanjaro for so long, it’s only now that we’re boarding the plane that it’s really dawned on me just how tough this could be! Worse still I’ve drawn the short straw so I get to sit next to Moyles for nearly nine hours!’

TAKE THAT star GARY BARLOW is hoping to make a quick recovery after injuring his back days before he embarks on a charity mission to climb Mount Kilimanjaro.The British singer's plans to scale the 19,000-foot (5,890 metre) peak in Africa were thrown into jeopardy after he injured his fourth vertebra, throwing his muscles into spasm. But the star remains optimistic he will be able to reach the peak's summit on Friday (27Feb09). He says, "I can't believe it - we've all been training for about six months and right at the last minute I put my back out. "But I'm healing every day. I've had a trapped nerve in January and my back went into spasm - but we've got seven days to go before I leave so I'm pretty sure I'm gonna be fine." Barlow and a host of other U.K. celebrities - including Girls Aloud singers Kimberley Walsh and Cheryl Cole, and Boyzone star Ronan Keating - are carrying out their ascent to raise money for British organisation Comic Relief.

Barlow Back Injury Keeps Him 'Up All Night'

Due to a hectic training schedule for his Comic Relief climb of Kilimanjaro and to promote the new Take That single ‘Up All Night’, the muscles in Gary Barlow’s back have gone into spasm. Gary saw an eminent specialist this morning together with Professor Greg Whyte who is the trainer for the ‘BT Red Nose Climb’ and has been treated appropriately for this minor injury.

There is no cause for concern as long as Gary continues to respond well to treatment and rests from now until he departs for the climb. Gary saw the specialist as a precaution because he is determined that he will be fit and well to continue his mission to raise mountains of cash for Red Nose Day which falls on March 13th this year. Concerts at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium could be under threat if South Wales Police pursue a plan to charge promoters full policing costs.

Despite not winning any gongs and quite blatantly miming, Take That still managed to provide one of the biggest 'wow' moments at this week's Brits. Donning sexy specs and zooming into the crowd aboard a spaceship hanging from the rafters, their performance was roughly 500 times as exciting as one of Duffy's acceptance speeches. What's more, this light-show spectacular came just as people were starting to question if Gary Barlow had been listening to too much Snow Patrol - yet another case of the comeback champs side-stepping expectations.

'Up All Night' pulls a similar trick, reminding casual fans that there's more to the manband than mammoth ballads. Mark Owen, now firmly characterised as 'the cheeky one', takes the lead on this Beatles-esque pop ditty. "I met this girl last night and she said, 'Why won't you marry me?" he sings over parping tubas and finger-clicking rhythms. "Well I'm too young for that, too dumb for that, too tired for that, too proud for that, too cool for that... Would you like to come back to my flat?" This isn't quite as good as 'Shine', but it's got enough charm and pop smarts to keep the TT bandwagon rolling on merrily.

Mount Kilimanjaro Too High For Take That Star

Kilimanjaro may be too high after all for Take That's Gary Barlow, after he put his back out just days before a climb up the mountain for charity.

The 38-year-old singer is due to scale the 19,000ft African peak next month with a team of celebrities to raise money for Comic Relief.

But fellow climbers Cheryl Cole, Ronan Keating and Denise Van Outen maybe have to start without him because doctors have advised him to rest until he departs this Friday.

A Comic Relief spokesman said: "Due to a hectic training schedule for his (climb) and to promote the new Take That single 'Up All Night', the muscles in Gary' Barlow's back have gone into spasm.

"Gary saw an eminent specialist together with Professor Greg Whyte who is the trainer for the 'BT Red Nose Climb' and has been treated appropriately for this minor injury."

He added that there was no cause for concern.

"Gary saw the specialist as a precaution because he is determined that he will be fit and well to continue his mission to raise mountains of cash," he said.

Other climbers taking part include Radio 1 DJ Chris Moyles and presenter Fearne Cotton.

TAKE THAT looked at their spec-sy best as they wowed fans at The Brits with their Independence Day style performance. The fab four descended into the Earls Court arena in a UFO with a beam of green light reminiscent of a scene from the hit movie - poking fun at alien-obsessed pal ROBBIE WILLIAMS.

Singing Greatest Day, the cheeky foursome didn’t fail to impress the waiting fans below, despite being dressed in matching black outfits and nerdy glasses. And the skin-tight outfits didn't do GARY BARLOW's new toned body any harm either, proving that all his training for his Comic Relief climb up Mount Kilimanjaro has certainlypaid off.
